SYNOPSIS
Set against the vast, unforgiving sea, Swept Away is a thrilling and deeply moving new musical that explores brotherhood, survival, and the search for redemption when everything else has been stripped away. Featuring the music of The Avett Brothers and a book by John Logan (Red, Moulin Rouge!), this hauntingly poetic work pulses with raw emotion, folk-rock energy, and timeless human truth. The story begins in 1888, off the coast of New Bedford, Massachusetts, where four sailors set out aboard a whaling ship. When a violent storm wrecks the vessel, only a few survivors remain—two brothers and two shipmates—adrift in an endless expanse of ocean. As the men battle hunger, despair, and their own moral boundaries, they’re forced to confront who they are, what they believe, and what they’re willing to sacrifice to stay alive. With soaring harmonies and a heart-wrenching narrative, Swept Away captures the struggle between faith and fate, sin and salvation, love and loss. It’s an unforgettable voyage that reminds us how fragile life is—and how, even in the darkest depths, hope can be the light that carries us home.
